General Description |
N-Heptane, also known as Heptane, is a colorless liquid hydrocarbon classified under the family of alkanes. It holds the chemical formula C7H16 and the CAS number 142-82-5. Often used as a laboratory solvent, it's primarily used in industry as a minor component of gasoline. N-Heptane is typically used as a standard to measure the combustion quality of gasoline in determining its octane rating. It can also be used in the production of rubber and in laboratories for testing, research, and development due to its non-polar properties. It's highly flammable, and precautions should be taken in its handling to prevent fires and explosions. N-Heptane should also be handled with personal protective equipment as it can cause skin irritation and eye damage and may be harmful or fatal if swallowed and enters airways. |
